Starting one page profiles before children join reception…
Within the first few weeks of the new school year starting, our Reception teachers have a half hour meeting with parents and children. This meeting is an opportunity for parents and teachers to get to know each other, for parents to gain a clearer understanding of school routines, and for the child to be part of this conversation.
For the first time, this year our reception teachers based their conversations around the areas on a One Page Profile. This meeting was a wonderful opportunity to find out what was important to the child as well as the parents. There was quality time for the parents to talk about how best to support their child, and to share experiences and strategies.
Our parents really appreciate this time, and are looking forward to the Profiles – they are all nearly complete and ready to be printed off and handed out. The teachers also enjoyed using the Profile as a structured starting point for discussions.
As our school motto goes, however, we are always ‘learning and growing together’. One comment from the teachers was that this meeting and input into the Profile really needs to be done even earlier in the school year; and ideally in July before the children come.
This would have implications in itself, but it is worth us thinking how we can improve on this meeting, and how it can be even more useful and meaningful.
The example above was taken from the booklet, One Page Profiles in Schools: A Guide.
